Amid United States New Tariffs, Xi Jinping, Narendra Modi, And Vladimir Putin To Discuss Protectionism
Chinese President Xi Jinping will hold meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other leaders of BRICS grouping during the G20 Summit in Japan, where they are likely to discuss about opposing the “protectionist” and “unilateralist” trade policies of the United States, reports a senior minister of China.
China is seeking to build a strong rivalry against the United President Donald Trump using tariffs and trade as a weapon to enforce his “America First” policy, claims the matter of “unilateral” and “protectionist” policies would be discussed further at the meetings of the leaders of RI (Russia, India, and China), BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) at Osaka.
The G20 Summit is scheduled on June 28 and June 29 at Japan’s Osaka. President Xi Jinping to visit Osaka a day before the summit to participate in informal meetings along with scheduled meet with President Trump for key discussion to end ongoing trade battle between the top two economies of the world.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi met at the recently held Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit at Bishkek.
Highlighting the significance of Xi-Modi-putin meeting at Osaka, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Zhang Jun said that “Given the current international landscape, the meeting among the three leaders is also of significance. As you know, China’s relations with Russia and India are showing sound momentum of growth.”
While informal talks of the RIC and BRICS will take place in all multilateral summits, said the Chinese officials at the Osaka meeting suppose as all major nations besides China, Russia, and India are facing trade and tariffs related issued with the United States.
China is fighting a trade war with the United States, the Chinese officials hope that India is also going through trade difficulties with the United States especially on termination of its nomination as a “beneficiary developing nation” under the GSP (Generalised System of Preferences), would join to fight against President Trump’s policies of “protectionist”.
Recently, India has announced retaliatory trade tariffs against the United States covering 28 United States-based products, including apples and almonds.
Zhung Jun told sources that “in the upcoming Osaka summit President Xi will have an informal summit with the BRICS leaders. The discussion topics will fit in well with the agenda of the G20 Summit.”
The leaders will exchange views and have good discussion to enhance cooperation to meet the main challenges facing the international community, oppose protectionism, and uphold the multilateralism, he added.
The other issue of discussion at the BRICS leader’s informal meeting will include political matters, cooperation on economy, people-to-people exchanges, and security among groups to further extend cooperation and uphold good momentum of BRICS cooperation, said Zhang, adding that they will also talk about plans for successful organizing of 2019 BRICS Summit in Brazil.
He continued, “I believe the upcoming informal meeting of BRICS leaders will contribute to the successful holding of the G20 Osaka summit and help provide new impetus to global economy.”
“This informal meeting also help deepen enduring cooperation among BRICS members,” added Zhang.
Citing the RIC Summit, Zhang Jun said that “the three leaders also maintained close exchanges” meets at different multilateral forums.
“Under the current circumstances, it is important for the three countries to strengthen coordination on major global issues and jointly uphold multilateralism, oppose protectionism and deepen cooperation on multilateral and international affairs to make an important contribution to the global peace,” he added.
Zhung claims, “At the same time, it can provide the impetus for the three countries to enhance cooperation at bilateral level and enhance mutual trust…We are confident that the meeting will produce positive results.”
President Trump has initiated the trade war since 2018, demands China to decrease the massive trade war that climbed to around USD 539 billion in 2018. He further urges China to workout verifiable measures for protection of technology transfer, intellectual property rights and more access to US-based products on Chinese markets.
Both the US and China have imposed additional tariffs on billions of dollars amount of their exports to each other.
