Congress Is In Search Of New Tribal Leader In Madhya Pradesh
Congress is looking for a new party chief in Madhya Pradesh after Chhattisgarh. Its main focus is on a clutch of leaders from the tribal community whose support is very important in propelling it to power last year. Currently, Chief Minister Kamal Nath is also the president of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC).
Mohan Markam was appointed by Congress as the tribal leader, responsible for its Chhattisgarh unit. Following this, speculation raised that MPCC, too, will get a tribal leader as its head. The team is trying to fix Home Minister Bala Bachchan, a tribal leader, as the MPCC chief, party sources said. Umang Singhar has the support of supporters of Congress general secretary Jyotiraditya Scindia, who wants to see him in the state unit.
The sources said that Mr. Singhar may face resistance from supporters of Congress veteran and former Chief Minister Digvijay Singh. Former Union minister Suresh Pachouris opinion will also be considered when making the crucial appointment, a Congress leader said.
The 72-year-old Kamal Nath, two days ago had stated that the Madhya Pradesh Congress would shortly get a new chief. Later he left for New Delhi to meet Congress President Rahul Gandhi. In New Delhi, the state party leaders are camping in New Delhi and having a conversation with the high command to reach a consensus over the new state president.
In December last year, Mr. Nath after taking the responsibility as chief minister, he offered to step down from the MPCC President’s post. Recently, in the Lok Sabha election, after Congress received a humiliating defeat, Mr. Nath again offered to resign. Dipak Babaria, the Congress general secretary in-charge of Madhya Pradesh declined to comment over the issue.
